Allen Won was born in Tokyo, Japan and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. After attending public school he enrolled at the University of Hawaii as a music education major. He would not finish his degree however, as he transferred to the Mannes College of Music in New York City. At Mannes, Allen matriculated with both his undergraduate and masters degree.
While In New York, Allen performed in just about every major venue including Carnegie Hall, Alice Tull Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, the Koch Theater, and the Met Opera house. He has also performed at La Mamma theater, CBGB’s, the Knitting Factory, the Public Theater, the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, Town Hall and the 92 street Y.
His performances ranged from Lincoln Center to downtown venues. Allen has played the gamut from classical music, avant guard jazz, rock and roll, with artists like Levon Helm, Little Feat, and broadway composer Galt MacDermot. He’s performed all across the United States touring with various ensembles playing in cities including Austin, Texas, Los Angeles and San Francisco and Boston, Massachusetts. Allen has also toured with the New York Philharmonic numerous times.
He appears on many recordings with ensembles ranging from broadway cast recording to original music composed by Galt MacDermot to movie scores including the most recent Westside Story produced and directed but Steven Speilberg.
